Refugee Week 2020
This Refugee Week (15 – 21 June 2020), the theme is ‘Imagine’.
This is an invitation to imagine – and fight for – the world we want to see. Because when things feel stuck; when the old ways of doing things are no longer working, that’s what we need to do. In the era of Covid-19, the call to imagine feels more important than ever. ‘To imagine’ means to picture something you can’t currently see. To step beyond the current moment, and perceive something different. Rather than being a flight away from reality, imagination is sometimes the best response to it – the only way to get us somewhere new. Maybe you’ll imagine a future where we’ve found new ways to care for our planet, transcend borders or protect human life. Or perhaps you’ll imagine what it’s like to have to leave your family behind, or what your hometown might look like to someone walking its streets for the first time.
You can get involved by holding or taking part in an online Refugee Week event or activity, or doing one of our Refugee Week 2020 Simple Acts.
Refugee Week is a UK-wide festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees. It is held every year around World Refugee Day on the 20th June, Refugee Week is also a growing global movement. Refugee Week brings about positive encounters between communities, helping them to connect and learn from each other, and promoting a culture of welcome.
Newman Catholic College has been recognised as a Citizens UK Refugee Welcome School and a School of Sanctuary. This means we committed to being a safe and welcoming place for all, especially those seeking sanctuary. This could be people whose lives were in danger in their own country, who have troubles at home or are just looking for a space of safety especially refugees and asylum seekers.
This year Refugee Week will be held virtually for the first time. Click on the links below to see some of our work from previous years
